An Analysis of Difficulties Confronted in Written Expression Skills by Arabic Language Students in Teaching Turkish as Foreign Language
Abstract :
In these days when international communication has become important, as well as mother tongue teaching, foreign language teaching is also tried to be realized and developed by experts using various methods. It is essential that the process of foreign language teaching should be supported by solid theoretical basis required by the chosen approaches and methods. Until today, it is seen that various approaches and methods are applied in the field of language and writing instruction and different results are obtained. Among these, the approach of analysis of mistakes which is accepted as one of the complementary methods of comparative linguistics, involves the determination, grouping and evaluation of mistakes that are made by students who aim to learn the target language in the process they use their acquired skills (here, written expression). In this paper, written expression skills in Turkish learning processes, mistakes about sound knowledge and morphology of a selected group from Arabic-speaking students studying at B1 level at Süleyman Demirel University Turkish and Foreign Language Teaching Application and Research Center (SDÜTÖMER), are evaluated on the axis of the approach namely analysis of mistakes. We have identified two topics; the first topic is “nowadays the influence of social media usage on people”, and the second one is “If I were rich…” Students are asked to write a text consisting of at least ninety words about the topic they selected and research data is tried to be obtained using these documents. Later on, mistakes made by students are presented as results by using numerical data and the difficulties encountered during the applications for the development of written expression skills of Arabic-speaking students are identified and categorized. These findings also offer a suggestion for students to remove the difficulties they faced. Based on these 44 points, the reasons of the difficulties encountered by Arabic-speaking students in written expression skills in Turkish teaching, are determined and the evaluations about them are presented
