Abstract :
This study discusses one of the laws passed by The First Grand National Assembly of Turkey, “Dügünlerde Men’i İsrâfat Kanunu” (Law for the Prohibition of Extravagances at Weddings), which was put into law on Nov. 25, 1920. The primary purpose of this law was to prevent wealth from being squandered during a time of National Struggle (“Milli Mücadele”). The Assembly also hoped to eliminate various social problems caused by extravagant and expensive weddings. Overtime, deficiencies in the implementation of the law caused its value to be questioned, and it was eventually repealed in 1967.
