Abstract :
It is very important to start vegetable production with good seeds and the strong and healthy seedlings produced from those seeds. One of the most important factors affecting the quality in vegetable seedlings is growing media. Mistakes made in choice and preparation of growing media cause less seedlings, seed, time, and labor losses, and even yield losses. One of the growing media and/or soil conditioners used in recent years is mineral soil conditioner ALSIL®. This study was conducted to investigate effects growing media obtained from 12 various combinations of ALSIL®, garden soil, farmyard manure, peat, sand and perlite on quality of pepper and eggplant seedlings. The research was conducted in semi-controlled and unheated glasshouse belonging to Kahramanmaras Sutcu Imam University, Agricultural Faculty, Department of Horticulture. To facilitate interpretations, emergence rate, number of true leaves, seedling height, stem diameter, shoot fresh and dry weight, root fresh and dry weight, and chlorophyll content (SPAD) of pepper and eggplant seedlings grown in different growing media were compared. According to results obtained from this research, the best result in respect to the parameters measured on pepper and eggplant seedlings was obtained from the growing media consisting of ALSIL®., garden soil and farmyard manure (1:2:1, v:v:v).
