Abstract :
Introduction: more than 1 million hip replacements are performed each year worldwide to reduce pain, improve mobility and to get a better quality of life (QOL). Sexual activity is a component to assess in QOL; However, little is known on how the total hip replacement (THR) affects sexual functioning and how health professionals manage sexuality with their patients.Aim: An analysis of the literature on sexual function in patients before and after THA.Methods: pubMed, Google Scholar, and PEDro are databases were used to search articles until March 2016 for terms related to sexual function and THR.Results: sexual activity before and after THR is an important question of quality of life. In patients with terminal stage hip osteoarthritis, it has been reported that THR has beneficial effects on the sexuel satisfaction and performance. Sexual activity risks after THR are rarely discussed by patients and medical staff .Conclusions: mobility is one of the factors that influence sexual activity. Practiciens should discuss with THR patients their sexual concerns and provide advice. Rehabilitation focuses specifically on the activities of daily life and should also be opened on sex advice with therapeutic exercises and suggestions of sexual positions.
