Abstract :
This contribution will consider and examine the use of the image (fixed or animated image, photos, textbook illustrations, advertising, caricature…) in different pedagogical methods and discuss how the image can help a language learner to acquire a communicative competence. In pedagogical field, the image, regarded for some as trend or fashion phenomena, or just like “spiritual crutch” for others (Piaget, 1969:110), characterizes indeed an important crossing to language teaching/learning, even if we do not consider its sociological importance as a medium that can hardly be obliterated. The goal of the image is not only to entertain the learners but also to enhance their ability to produce meaning and comprehend things. R. Barthes highlighted the pedagogical importance of the image when he asserted that the latter can, indeed, add meaning to the text.
