Abstract :
Turgutlu, the topic of our study, was a village in Yengi subdistrict of Manisa in the XVIth Century. A Bazaar has been established in Turgutlu which has got five quarters since 1610. Turgutlu has been called a town since that date and it has become the centre of Yengi subdistrict. The term of Kasaba has begun to be used more widely instead of Turgutlu among the people since that time. Turgutlu after being a town grew rapidly, three quarters have been added in XVIIIth century in addition to its five quarters in XVIth century. Although there are some studies examining the social and economic structure of the town in XVIth and XIXth century, any study related with its position in XVIIIth century hasn’t been conducted so far. In this article, it is intended to reveal the social end economic situation of the Town between the years 1690-1835 by using hurûfât records. The quarters and villages, social and religious structures such as the mosque, fountains, wells, schools, madrasahs of Turgutlu have been identified by using the information in hurûfât records. The information about what kind of officials were employed in these institutions and how they were appointed to these tasks has also been specified in this study.
