Abstract :
Since the first time we had interaction with money, the existence of a wide range of different economic systems across eras and territories show how important money is for us. Money is the only means of exchange we use for fulfilling our needs. Metal currencies that existed long before banknotes, which used to be named as sikke, are now in the form of coins. The sikkes, which were once made of metals such as gold, silver, copper, and electron, had different values depending on the raw material used. Today, there are memorial coins minted for special days or in the name of certain figures. The designs of Hakkı Baha Çavuşgil, a specialist on this subject, provide contemporary examples of such memorial coins. We also have memorial coins minted in the name of some important figures of our naval history, such as Barbaros Hayreddin Paşa, Piri Reis, Seydi Ali Reis, Turgut Reis, Cezayirli Gazi Hasan Paşa, and Çaka Bey. They were designed by Hakkı Baha Çavuşgil and other artists whose names are not referred by the General Directorate of Minting and Printing. In this study, the ship depictions on the coins minted in order to glorify our great sailors will be examined. Within this context, the coins will be listed chronologically per their dates of minting, and how those types of ships reflect on the coin depictions will be investigated.
