Abstract :
Aim. In this study we aimed to determine etiological factors in patients admitted with hemoptysis and followed-up in our inpatient clinic within one year and discuss the results under the light of the current literature. Methods. A total of 474 cases followed-up in our clinic in that year and major complaint was hemoptysis in 59(12.4%) of them. Results. Consolidation (n=25, 67.5%) and hilar enlargement (n=12, 32.4%) were the most common findings on chest X-ray. In computerized tomography (CT) pathologic findings were seen commonly in the left side (n=13, 46.4%) ; followed by bilateral (n=9, 32.1%) and right sided involvement (n=6, 21.4%). The most common pathologic finding was mass in CT (n=10, 35.7%). A definitive diagnosis was reached in 50 cases(84.7%) and 1 case was died as following. A patient was died before diagnosis. As diagnostic procedures rejected eight of the patients were not definitively diagnosed. Causes of hemoptysis were lung cancer (28%); bronchiectasis (26%); pulmonary tuberculosis (22%); pneumonia (22%); and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (20%). Diagnoses were mostly depended on clinical/radiological findings (78%) and flexible bronchoscopy/bronchoscopic biopsy (50%). Conclusion. The rate of definitive diagnoses rises over 90% by using certain clinical, radiological or advanced procedures. Convenient therapeutical approach requires etiological diagnosis.
