Abstract :
Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a major health problem that is growing rapidly in the world wide and causes significant consequences for patients and also society. Some conventional therapies for type 2 diabetes mellitus have side effects such as weight gain, hypoglycemia, and gastrointestinal distres. Also, in long term usage efficacy and tolerability of the conventional therapies decreases because of the progressive nature of the disease leading to inadequate glycemic control. So, for a new antidiabetic agent called dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP 4) inhibitors has been developed and is orally administered for treatment of type 2 diabetes. DPP 4 inhibitors such as sitagliptin, vildagliptin, alogliptin were approved in US and Europe for use in clinics as monotherapy or in combination regimens for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. These inhibitors are effective and well tolerated as a treatment for type 2 diabetes, either for monotherapy or in combination with thiazolidinediones, sulfonylureas, metformin and insulin, with an excellent safety antidiabetic drug profile. In this review, the efficacy of vildagliptin, alogliptin and saxagliptin on evidence relating to type 2 diabetes patients glycaemic control will be discussed by reviewing the current studies.
