Abstract :
Aim. We aimed to investigate retrospectively the forensic reports prepared by the collaboration of Forensic Science and Ear Nose and Throat departments in Cumhuriyet University, School of Medicine and to evaluate our results by means of forensic science in the light of the literature. Methods. Between the time January 2005 and June 2009; 9750 criminal cases were evaluated at the Department of Forensic Medicine of Medical Faculty of Cumhuriyet University, and 426 (22.8%) of these cases were evaluated with the Department of Ear Nose and Throat in this descriptive study. The forensic reports were investigated by means of sex, age, type of event, the vital risk, presence of simple medical intervention, nasal and temporal bone fracture, constant face marks and loss or weakness of functioning. Results. Among all the patients 345 (81%) were male and 81 were (19%) female and the most prevelant age groups were 20-29 (122 cases; 28.6%) and 40-49 (87 cases; 20.4%) respectively. The most common type of event was beating both in male (69.9%) and in female (53.1%) patients and it was also the commonest event in general regardless of sex (66,7%). Conclusion. In this study, the profile of the forensic cases who were admitted to the Department of Ear Nose and Throat was determined. In general, the obtained data are similar to results of other studies conducted in Turkey. Educational level of the society is the basic reason that made beating the commonest event. Also in this study, the importance of increasing educational level in protecting the community from forensic events, the necessity in making mass education programs showing the importance of communication in human relationships rather than physical power and also the necessity in directing all people to socio-cultural activities were emphasized.
