Abstract :
The practitioners of agricultural extension activities are extension staff. Socioeconomic and professional qualifications of extension staff are effective on their success in implementation. The aim of this study was to obtain information about agricultural extension activities of personnel employed in agricultural directorates of Erzurum city and counties, application methods, the qualifications of extension staff, working conditions, and the difficulties they experience. The questionnaires given to 131 extension personnel in Erzurum province and counties made up the main material of the study. According to the results, it was determined that 65.6 % of the personnel employed in Erzurum was urbanbased, 57 % was between 20-35 years old, 53 % was graduate of agricultural faculty, 50 % was trained in agricultural extension, and that 43% was not satisfied with their profession. It was also found that 58.8 % of the extension staff served about 41-80 villages, 45.8 % applied to the specialists to obtain information, 87.8 % went to the land between 1-5 days a month and 43.5 % had a professional approach to bring solutions to the problems of farmers. In this context, it is necessary that extension personnel should be subjected to inservice training periodically, the number of villages and farmers should be limited and the level of professional satisfaction should be increased.
