Abstract :

In this study, the change within Turkey s agricultural sector in the past 15 years was analyzed by making use of secondary data (TÜİK).The aim of the present paper is to analyze how agriculture meets the society s food needs, provides raw material to the industry sector, contributes to export and creates employment opportunities. In the recent years, the rural population has decreased dramatically, which has resulted in an increase in the urban population. Productive people have become consumers in the urban life. The relative importance of agricultural sector in the country s economy has decreased while the relative importance of the services sector has increased. Although Turkey was one of the countries which met its agricultural needs on its own, now it has become an importer of some products. Consequently, Turkey should produce high quality products which can meet its own needs and compete with developed countries such as the EU and produce policies to this end.
