Determination of Plant Material and Preferences in Squatter Gardens: In The Case of Dağ (Gaziler) District in Erzurum
Abstract :
Squatting is one of the results of rapid urbanization process that has been seen in our contemporary cities. In Turkish cities, in the rapid urbanization process squatter settle-ments that are quite often defined as problem areas, have emerged since 1950s. Erzurum is one of the cities in which squatter settlements have been seen largely. However, among the squatter settlements of Erzurum, ‘Dağ (Gaziler) District’, which is also the first squatter settlement of the city, show differences in terms of its green pattern which consists of the squatter gardens. Dağ district is not only differs from other squatter areas, but it also draw attention among all settlement areas in the city. While often described as unhealthy urban areas, Dağ district draw attention with its green pattern and that is created the starting point of the present research. From here, the aim of present study is determination of the plant species that are preferred by the people living in that area and the factors affecting the choices of plant species. For this purpose, within the context of present study the plant species were investigated on site and, interviews and questionnaires were conducted with the homeowners in the Dağ District. At the end, the present research revealed that home-owners, who designed their gardens without professional help, preferred fruit trees and shrubs more than ornamental plants; most of the homeowners brought plants from the re-gions they migrated; and homeowners are mostly affected by gardens of their neighbors’ in the selection of plants species in the case of Dağ District.
