Abstract :
Energy in today’s world has gaining an ever-increasing significance and thus, new energy sources are searched throughout the world. Limited nature of currently available fossil fuel reserves and their negative impacts on environment have brought about a trend toward to renewable and environment-friendly energy sources. Solar, wind, geothermal and agriculture-originated biomass energy are the most significant renewable energy sources. In this study, agricultural biomass energy equivalent potential of Mersin province was determined and the resultant data were compared with the data reported for Turkey and Mediterranean region. Fruits, vegetables, cereals, oil seeds and dry legumes were considered as agricultural materials and their average agricultural biomass energy equivalents were calculated in MW. It was estimated for Mersin province that 21.717 MW agricultural biomass energy could be obtained from cereals, 14.445 MW from fruits, 4.212 MW from vegetables, 3.246 MW from dry legumes, 1.608 MW from oil seeds and ultimately a total of 45.228 MW from agricultural biomass. The resultant total value was equal to 1.93% of biomass energy potential of Turkey and 15.86% of Mediterranean region. It was concluded that agricultural biomass energy equivalent of Mersin province had a significant potential for both the Mediterranean region and Turkey.
