Situation of the Cattle Production in Erzurum Province and Some Suggestions for Its Improvement

Abstract :
In this study, problems of the livestock production of Erzurum and suggestions of the solution for improvement of the cattle husbandry were presented, after investigation of the current situation of cattle rearing in Erzurum and Turkey. Total cattle available in Erzurum province was composed of crossbreds (78.51 %), European cattle breeds (11.39 %) and native cattle breeds (9.92 %). 4.6 % of the total number of the cattle in Turkey is Contribution ratio of the total number of cattle in Erzurum to number of these in Turkey is 4.6 %. Contribution of Erzurum Province to Turkey in terms of number of milking cows and total milk production were 4.5 % and 4.3 % respectively. Average milk yield per animal in Erzurum province was 4.2 % lower than mean milk production per cow in Turkey. Average carcass weight of cattle in Erzurum is 31.4 % lower than average of Turkey.To achieve better and more profitable livestock production in Erzurum Province, production of roughage and concentrate feeds has to be increased, and commercial cattle breeding has to be encouraged, and herdsman’s occupation has to be more attractive. In order to make more profitable productions of beef and milk, appropriate ratio of milk/feed has to realized, and training for the cattle breeders has to given by the current cattle breeding associations about cattle nutrition and rearing, and projects have to be made for processing, packaging, marketing as well as export of beef and milk, breeding animals has to be reared for sale purpose, EU standards for animal health and welfare has to be followed, and old as well as useless barn buildings have to be reconstructed and their plans have to be modernized and renewed.
