Abstract :
Species belonging to the family Solanaceae are widely grown in Turkey. Capia type of red pepper [Capsicum annuum L. var. conoides (Mill.) Irish] populations are used intensively in Bafra Plain, Samsun. The aim of this study was to determine similarities and differences regarding morphological variation of red pepper genetic resources collected from Bafra Plain under the ecological conditions of Samsun in 2004-2005. In this research, 56 populations of red peppers were collected. Cluster and Principles component analysis (PCA) were performed to determine relationships among populations. Cluster analysis based on 20 variables identified 8 groups in the current study. The dendogram was prepared to evaluate morphological similarity between red pepper genotypes. Principles component analysis revealed that the first three PC axes explained 74.3% of the total multivariate variation. Morphological variability was found high among the red pepper genotypes. This evaluation of plant trait variability can assist geneticists and breeders to identify populations with desirable characteristics for inclusion in pepper breeding programs.
