Abstract :
Although Saperda populnea (L.) (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) is one of the serious insect pests of Lombardy poplars (Populus nigra L.), there is not any detailed study on biology and damage of this species in Turkey. Biology and damage of S. populnea were studied under field conditions in the Aras Valley (Kars and Erzurum provinces) during 2005–2006. The pest overwintered in larval stage within galls, which are formed during the feeding of the larvae, in twigs of poplar tree. Full grown larva started pupation in the pupal cell, which produced by larvae, in the middle of April. The adults start to appear in early May. After copulation, female adult cut a horse shoe-shaped depression into the bark through to the sapwood, and a single egg was laid in each. Eggs were hatched in 11–14 days. The larva first feed on the wounded tissues induced during egg lying and then moved to the heartwood. During the feeding of the larvae gall reached up to walnut size. Damage was observed in the whole poplar shoots. The life cycle of S. populnea spans over more than a year in the Aras Valley (Kars and Erzurum provinces) ecological condition.
