EFFECT OF LAMB BIRTH WEIGHT ON FIBER NUMBER AND TYPE OF SEMITENDINOSUS MUSCLE
Abstract :
The level of maternal feeding in pregnancy period is one of the reasons of low or high birth weight. It is known that level of nutrition in pregnancy period affects muscle fiber numbers. This case may affect the birth weight of lambs. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of birth weight on fiber number and type in Semitendinosus (ST) muscle. Experimental animals were Karayaka female lambs (n=15). Lambs were allocated in 2 groups considering birth weights. Groups were defined as low birth weight and high birth lambs according to the mean birth weight of lambs. First and second group consisted of 8 (2.68±0.07 kg) and 7 (4.05±0.14 kg) animals, respectively. Lambs were weaned at 110 day and subjected to 55 day fattening period. All necessary measurements were taken at the end of the fattening period. Then, Semitendinosus muscle samples were isolated and samples were frozen in liquid nitrogen at -196 °C, and this samples were stored at - 80 °C. In order to determine muscle fiber number and type, samples were collected in 10 μm thickness by using cryostat and stained by ATPase. Mean fiber number in ST were determined to be 15393 in high birth weight lambs while it was 10191 in low birth weight lambs (P 0.05). There was no significant differences between low and high birth weight groups in terms of muscle fiber types of ST muscle (P 0.05) There was significant differences between low and high birth lamb groups in terms of fat thickness (P 0.05), and no significant differences were found between low and high birth weight groups in terms of loin thickness (P 0.05). As a conclusion, this study showed that birth weight had no effect on total fiber number of Semitendinosus muscle.
