A STUDY ON THE ESTABLISHMENT OF ADAPTABILITY OF WINTER SAFFLOWER (Carthamus tinctorius L.) GENOTYPES IN SAMSUN ECOLOGICAL CONDITIONS

Abstract
This research was carried out at the Department of Field Crops of Agricultural Faculty, Ondokuz Mayıs University to select the best genotypes from a total of 208 winter sown safflower genotypes of World Safflower Collection showing high performance in terms of germination date, vegetation period, the first flowering time, the last flowering time, plant height, 1000-seeds weight and seed yield. In this research, some phenological and morphological characters, which are basic criteria for selection, were determined by considering the characterization tables of UPOV. It was determined that there was a large amount of variation among genotypes regarding all characters investigated and that some genotypes also had a high level of variation between individuals within genotype. Finally, it is possible to select suitable winter safflower varieties from these genotypes adaptable to Samsun ecological conditions.
