ANALYSIS ON THE REASONS FOR QUITTING SHEEP AND GOAT REARING OF FARMERS: A CASE OF EAST ANATOLIA REGION
Abstract :
Turkey has an important potential in terms of the number of sheep and goat. Despite the current pasture and grassland potential of Turkey is suitable for sheep and goat farming, this potential has not been utilized efficiently. The data of study were obtained from 273 face to face interviews with farmers who have been given up sheep farming in Eastern Anatolia Region. The study aimed to determine the reasons of quitting sheep and goat farming by using Simple Ranking Method. The result of analysis showed that low income of farming and the shortage of shepherd are the main reasons of quitting sheep and goat farming. In order to eliminate these reasons, a certain amount of subsidy per animal head should be given for supporting raising and breeding purpose. This type of livestock farming should be encouraged in order to avoid the destruction of pasture land animals.
