Abstract :
In this study, it was aimed to determine the yield and quality performances of susceptible and resistant varieties, which have been bred recently, in rhizomania-infested soils in Eskişehir province and -uninfested soils in Ilgın district of Konya province and Hasankale district of Erzurum province in Turkey. Virus content of the resistant varieties was found to be 2-3 times lower than that of the susceptible varieties in the infested soils in Eskişehir. In the sites of three trials, the highest root yield was obtained from the varieties, firstly ‘Esperanza’and secondly ‘Valentina’. On the other hand, ‘Felicita’ had the highest sugar and extractable sugar content. In the uninfested soil in Hasankale, ‘Verity’ in terms of sugar content and ‘Verity’ and ‘Arosa’ in terms of extractable sugar content had the same values as ‘Felicita’. Rhizomania caused 38% losses in root yield, 19% in sugar content, 26% in extractable sugar content and 54% sugar yield in susceptible varieties when compared to resistant varieties. On the other hand, the contents of sodium and potassium increased at the rate of 50 and 9%, respectively, but the content of α-amino nitrogen decreased at the rate of 67 % in susceptible varieties when compared to resistant ones. Although resistant varieties gave 3% higher root and sugar yield than susceptible varieties in the uninfested soil of Ilgın, it was not observed any differences between resistant and susceptible varieties in terms of quality parameters. Resistant varieties showed better performance than susceptible varieties for sugar and extractable sugar content (4%) and sugar yield (%2) but they showed worse performance than them for potassium content (7%) in the uninfested soil of Hasankale.
