Abstract :
Spininess and flower color are important hereditary characteristics of safflower (Carthamus tinctoriusL.) used in fresh-cut and dried flowers as ornamental plant. In present study, F1 and F2 generations andtheir backcross (BC1P1 and BC1P2) progenies of Dinçer 5-118 (P1, spineless and red flower) andMontola 2000 (P2, spiny and yellow flower) were analyzed with the aim of determining the mode ofinheritance of spiny and flower color.. Spininess and color flower of safflower were controlled by singledominant gene, each of which is independently. The spiny phenotype was completely dominant tospineless. Also, the red flower phenotype was completely dominant to yellow flower. All plants in theF1 generation had red flowers and spiny phenotype. In the segregation F2 generation, individuals wereclassified in four group fitting a 9:3:3:1 ratio (red-spiny: red-spineless: yellow-spiny:yellow-spineless).All plants in the BC1P1 generation had red flower, but segregated into a 1:1 ratio for spiny andspineless. On the other hand, all of BC1P1 population had spiny, but segregated into a 1:1 ratio for redand yellow color of flower.
