EFFECT OF BATH COMPOSITION ON STRUCTURE OF Pd-Ag MEMBRANE SYNTHESIZED BY ELP (ELECTROLESS PLATING) TECHNIQUE
Abstract :
ELP (Electroless Plating), one of the membrane preparation techniques, stands out because of the usage of simple equipments, inexpensive and easy implementation. In this study, the effect of plating bath compositions on the structure of Pd-Ag composite membrane prepared by ELP technique was investigated. Experimental studies were carried out with two different Pd/Ag mass ratios of plating baths. PdCl2, AgCl2, Na2EDTA, N2H4, NH4OH and distilled water were used in plating bath. Plating studies were carried out in the pH range of 10-11 and at 35°C. The highest mass gain was determined at the second plating step for the membrane synthesized in bath with Pd/Ag ratio of 2 while it was determined at the first step for the membrane synthesized in plating bath with Pd/Ag ratio of “6”. Branched crystalline formations on the surface of the membrane synthesized in bath with Pd/Ag ratio of “6” were explained by the difference in the rates of plating Pd and Ag metals. 19% (by mass) of Pd was determined on layer of the membrane synthesized in bath with Pd/Ag ratio of 2, this value increased up to about 61% for the membrane synthesized in bath with Pd/Ag mass ratio of “6”. It was predicted that Pd and Ag distributed more uniformly on the surface of the membrane synthesized in bath with Pd/Ag mass ratio of “6”. It was shown that increasing the total amount of metal by keeping Pd/Ag ratios constant did not affect the composition and the structure of the membranes. Pd/Ag ratio was shown to be important parameter.
