Socio-economic importance of goose breeding

This research was made to determine the socio-economic importance of the goose breeding in Ardahan for the region that it belongs. In this research, the most important features of goose breeding is determined as providing winter meat consumption of the family business and obtain additional income for the home as well. Interviews with breeders shows that, for chicks and geese per farm, annual average vitamin-mineral and drug costs 84.64 TL; labor costs 275.41 TL and the total cost is 766.57 TL including annual feeding costs. In the interviews, 79.31% of the farmers either sell the breeding goose as the whole carcass (fresh / dried) after cutting and clearing them or sell alive by an average of 78.43 TL for each and make total income of 1.890 TL for their enterprise. Thus, goose breeding provide alternative source of income for local people. In accordance with the observations and obtained data we can say that, breeding goose with more technical methods and creation of marketing infrastructure help significantly increase the income of growers.
