Abstract :
Forensic patients coming to a hospitals’ emergency unit are first examined by physicians, nurses and other health workers of these units. An informed consent approved by the suspect or victim and the decision from a court or judge are essential in order to collect the biological materials for the biological and chemical examinations. Previous studies indicated that professionals of emergency services who have dealt with forensic cases have had insufficient instructions about collection, storage and transfer of the biological samples through the chain of custody. In forensic investigations, medical personnel should be aware of their legal responsibilities and the importance of their procedures. This situation can provide appropriate collection and prevent the contamination of critical evidences. The objective of this study is to provide information about collection, custody, security, handling and storing of biological samples for medical personnel in emergency units. As a result, medical personnal in emergency services who are well-trained about forensic sciences, have been vocationally retrained, supplied with sufficient equipment and have interacted with a Prosecutor of the Republic will produce better results in relation to their responsibilities for forensic incidents.
