The Conception of Maps among the Teacher Candidates of Social Sciences and Their Approaches to Using Maps
Abstract :
Maps, which are among the most important tools for geography teaching and learning, play an important role in allowing students to better understand and analyze the environment in which they live and comprehend the spatial aspects of the geographic phenomena. The map skills that can be grouped under the three titles including map making, map reading, and map interpreting constitute one of the fundamental components of the contemporary geographic curricula and appear in the mission and vision of these curricula. This study aiming at the graduate students in social science education departments evaluates the map perception, map using abilities, and opinions of social science teacher candidates about maps. Moreover, the key points that should be emphasized in the teaching and learning process were addressed in order to provide a set of research gaps and future research directions.
