A Study on Formation, Distribution and Functional Characteristics of Tombolos on the Coasts of Turkey
Abstract :
Turkey is a country surrounded by sea on three sides between the continents of Europe and Asia. The total length of coastlines in the country is 8333 km. Many different types of coasts developed under a variety of factors and processes can be observed. Basically, the coastal topography, which also constitutes a natural wealth of the country, and the tombolos studied within this context draw attention as distinctive formations. Some of the tombolos existing on our country’s coastline have been dealt with in a number of publications.The purpose of this paper is to contribute to preparation of a list, providing a large number of tombolo examples from the Turkish coastline. Therefore, rather than examining the tombolos in details, brief information up to a few paragraphs is provided about their formation, distribution and functional characteristics in this paper.
