Abstract :
This study aims to determine the predictive power of math anxiety, positive and negative perfectionism for mathematics achievement of 8th grade students. Relational model was used in the study. The sampling of the study was consisted of 201 Primary School students (102 girls and 99 boys) attending 8th grade in Battalgazi-Malatya. “Math Anxiety Scale for Primary School Students” developed by Bindak (2005) to determine students’ mathematics anxiety and “Positive and Negative Perfectionism Scale” developed by Kırdök (2004) to determine characteristics of students’ positive and negative perfectionism were used. Average of students mathematics notes in the 6th and 7th grades are taken as the achievements scores of mathematics. The obtained data were analyzed by using Pearson Product-Moment Correlation and Stepwise Regression Analyze on SPSS 17.0 package program. Research findings revealed that math anxiety, positive perfectionism and negative perfectionism explain %24 of total variance on mathematics achievement and the most powerful predictor variable is math anxiety. It is thought that research findings will shed light on the studies on increasing achievement in mathematics.
