An Investigation of Digital Divide among Fifth Grade Students in Terms of Various Variables: Diyarbakır Case
Abstract :
Digital divide concept, explained as digital gap among teachers and students in terms of education, is generally defined as differences in access to and usage of Information and CommunicationTechnologies [ICT] among individuals, groups, and communities. The purpose of this study is toinvestigate fifth grade students ICT access facilities, and usage status and ICT usage purposes. This research was carried out with data obtained from 539 primary students of fifth grade in primary schools of Bağlar, Yenişehir, Kayapınar and Sur central districts in Diyarbakır. The data were collected by “ICT Access Facilities and Usage Questionnaire” developed by researchers. Techniques of descriptive statistics and non-parametric tests were used to analyze the data. Results of this study suggest that there is a digital divide in terms of ICT access facilities and usage status among students. Gender, the number of households, parents’ working status, parents’ and siblings’ computer and/or internet usage status are associated variables with primary school fifth grade students’ ICT usage purposes.
