Abstract :
The main aim of science education today is not to teach students more science, but develop more their scientific reasoning ability. Questioning lies at the heart of scientific inquiry. In this context, the aim of this study was to examine question-posing ability of primary level students after reading two paragraphs dealing with SIV-H1N1 and Carbohydrates. Research sample consisted of 816 students (Grades from 4 to 8) studying in the five elementary schools in Edirne, Tekirdağ, Kırklareli and İstanbul, during the spring term of 2009-2010 academic year. According to results, the most of the questions students generated for both the SIV-H1N1 and Carbohydrates were ‘the knowledge level’. The fifth grade students seemed to be more successful in question-generating for ‘knowledge’ level, while the sixth grade students are capable of at ‘the comprehension level’. The number of the questions generated for ‘the analysis’, ‘synthesis’ and ‘assessment level’ was too low for all grade level. It was found that the students were tended to generate ‘assessment level’ questions about the SIV-H1N1 which is a upper cognitive level.
