Abstract :
The purpose of this study is to determine the concept competences and misconceptions of faculty of education students on eleven basic concepts studied in introduction to educational science (IES) course. This study is a survey research and descriptive in nature. The study group consists of 61 students studying in faculty of education at Kahramanmaraş Sütçü İmam University. The data is collected through students’ writing of the definitions of eleven concepts determined in IES course content. The collected data were analyzed by applying content analysis method which is one of the qualitative analysis methods determine the concept competences and misconceptions of students. Moreover, the data was analyzed by applying descriptive statistics and Mann Whitney U-test. The results of the study showed that average of students’ concept competences on all the basic concepts in IES course were mostly inadequate and average levels of concept competence for each concept were inadequate in more than half of the concepts. Although all the students averagely have the ‘inadequate defining’ type of the misconceptions, students of division of primary maths teaching are significantly more adequate than the students of division of computer education and instructional technology.
