Title Of Article :
Reasons for University Student’s Program Choice.
Abstract :
The purpose of this study was to investigate and survey the reasons why university students selected their program majors from among the many choices available. The study sought to identify patterns of rationale for choice by gender, university type (private or public), type of high school attended (academic, science or vocational), and parental educational attainment. Additionally the study solicited information regarding the level of satisfaction from among the subjects. The data were collected through the use of a survey instrument composed of three sections to assess demographics, rationale for program choice and satisfaction with the selected program from 869 university students. Factors which effect career decisions were grouped as individual, social, systemic, and chance. SPSS 15 was used for data analysis. The results of this investigation provide a view of those categories of factors that seem to affect university program choice with systemic factors and personal characteristics having the greatest impact on choice. Systemic factors such as earning potential or program placement based on university entrance exam scores were significant factors. The participants indicated a general level of satisfaction with their program choice. Implications for further study were discussed along with implications for possible counselor interventions.
