Opinions of the Instructors and the Teacher Candidates in the Faculty of Education About Student Centered Education Sample of Mersin University
Abstract :
The aim of this research is to identify the opinions of both the instructors and the teacher candidates in the Faculty of Education about Student Centered Education (SCE) approach. The study group consists of 43 instructors and 42 teacher candidates working/studying in the Faculty of Education, Mersin University during the 2011-2012 academic year. The researchers used two different forms with open-ended questions prepared by them in order to gather data from the instructors and the teacher candidates. As a result of this research, the instructors and the teacher candidates defined SCE as a learning method in which students are active participants and in the center of learning while the instructors have the role of guiding students. The instructors stated that when they conducted their lessons based on SCE they made student presentations, group work, research and project work as different teaching methodologies. Similarly, the teacher candidates stated that they mostly focused on the presentations and semi-teacher and semi-student-centered activities in such lessons. Finally, regarding the problems faced during the implementation of SCE approach, both the instructors and the teacher candidates mentioned that they had some difficulties due to the physical conditions and crowded classes.
