Abstract :

Proverbs; which are the products of the common mind of a society where they exist are among the elements of spoken culture. Societies have used conveying of meanings which they have got through experiences with proverbs as a method. Proverbs are the effective expressions where expressional arts are used. They become exist in sentences. In this respect each proverb explains one determination. When considered them one by one, it can be understood that they refer to a specific condition or an event an individual can go through. The words/concepts that build proverbs have an essential importance in exploring the common mind of a society. The studies on proverbs are very limited. Considering the vocabulary of proverbs as a whole is very important in finding out the sensitiveness of a society. The researches which will be done on quantity, frequency and parts of speech of their vocabulary can explore interesting findings. The aim of this study is to determine the word frequency of Turkish proverbs. For this reason, proverbs of Turkey Turkish have been determined and a proverb pool is formed. Vocabulary and word frequency of proverbs can be seen and the findings are evaluated according to fundamental measurements of word frequency and finally, they are compared with general word frequency lists and commented.
