Abstract :

Developing a Communication Skills Scale: Validity and Reliability Studies. The purpose of the study was to develop a valid and reliable scale for the assessment of communication skills. Data were collected from three different groups of university students. The first group consisted of 162 university students and the sample was used for explanatory factor analysis. The second group composed of 144 students and this sample was used for confirmatory factor analysis. A final sample of 78 students was also selected to examine reliability of the scale using a test-retest process. Communication Skills Scale, Extraversion subscale of the Adjective Based Personality Test (ABPT), and Demographic Information Form were used to collect the data. The results showed that the scale consisted of 25 items and 4-factors. The findings suggested that the scale had adequate internal consistency, criterion validity, and reflected the four-factor structure. Also, MANOVA analysis indicated that female students scored higher than males on communication scale. The results showed that the Turkish version of the scale can be reliably used to assess communication skills for Turkish university students. These results were discussed in the light of earlier research findings.
