Abstract :
The purpose of this research is to examine the critical reading skills of 7th grade students. In the study descriptive scanning model was used. 300 students from Ataker Secondary School, Hayrettin Özkan Secondary School and Ayşe Fitnat Secondary School which are located in province of Antakya in Hatay, compose the study grup of the research. For the data of the research, the Critical Reading Skill Assessment Tool developed by the researcher and Personal Information Form were used. The obtained data were analyzed by independent sample t-test and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). As a result of the research, it was determined that the critical reading levels of the 7th grade students were in the middle level. It was also found that there was a significant difference between female students and male students in favor of female students. It was found that Students who spent more time weekly reading and students who read much more books during the year scored more in critical reading skill assessment tool. Students who saw themselves as successful and very successful in Turkish lesson and students who had a high score in the first semester in Turkish lesson were found to have higher scores from the critical reading skill assessment tool. However, it wasn’t found a significant relationship between critical reading skills and the time spent on television, computer, or tablet.
