Breast Cancer Woman’s Experiences and Psycho-Social Needs within the Framework of Health Counseling

The purpose of the study is to investigate the experiences and the basic psyho-social needs of breast cancer women receiving treatment. The study group consisted of 20 breast cancer women receiving treatment in two metropolitan cities in the Mediterranean Region of Turkey. The data were gathered by utilizing semi-structured interview method including 6 interview questions developed by the researchers. The data collected through interviews were content-analyzed including the process of identifying, coding, and categorizing the primary patterns of data. The results of the study provide evidence that the experiences and the basic psycho-social needs of the participants can be examined under four themes, namely responses to breast cancer diagnosis and treatment, coping strategies, protective and vulnerability factors and psycho-social recourses and needs. Implications of the findings were discussed and some suggestions were made for further research.
