Abstract :
The purpose of the current study is to investigate the extent to which attachment to parents and the need for social approval predict interpersonal competence. The study group of the current research is comprised of a total of 321 students (239 females and 82 males) studying at different departments of a university located in a city in the Central Black Sea Region of Turkey. In the study, The Father, Mother and Peer Attachment Inventory, The Scale of the Need for Social Approval, The Interpersonal Competence Scale and a personal information form were used to collect data. In the analysis of the data, Pearson Correlation Analysis was used to analyze the relationships between the variables and Multiple Regression Analysis was used to determine the extent to which the independent variables predict the dependent variables. It was found that the whole model explains %20 of interpersonal competence. The findings indicated that attachment to the parents has an effect and especially attachment to the father has greater contribution to the model than attachment to the mother. Among the three subdimensions of need for social approval, “social withdrawal” did not contribute to the model whereas the other two subdimensions, “sensitivity to others’ judgements” and “pozitive impression”, were found to have significant contribution to the model. Research findings were discussed within the context of related literature and some suggestions were provided for researchers and practitioners in the field of psychological counseling and guidance.
