Abstract :
In this study, the effects of deep cryogenic treatment (-196 ºC) applied to M35 HSS twist drills on tool life, tool wear, micro-structure and micro-hardness were investigated in drilling of AISI D2 cold work tool steel. The drilling experiments were performed at three different cutting speeds (20, 25, and 30 m/min), a constant feed rate (0.1 mm/rev) and hole depth (7 mm). It was observed from micro-structure photographs and micro hardness values that deep cryogenic treatment significantly was effective on transformation of retained austenite to martensite and more homogenous distribution of white carbides. The cryogenically treated drills showed better performance in terms of the tool life and wear, when compared with untreated drills. Tool life experiments showed that lives of treated drills improved as much as 33-62%. BUE formation, outer corner wear and flank wear generally were effective on tools. In general, it was found that deep cryogenic treatment had positive effects on the tool wear and tool life.
