GENERIC ANALYTICAL AND SIMULATION MODEL FOR TDMA‒BASED WIRELESS SENSOR NETWORK MEDIUM ACCESS CONTROL PROTOCOLS
Abstract :
The vast variety of Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) applications makes it necessary that they should be easily tested and validated before deployment. In this work, it is aimed at obtaining the basic criteria that are used to evaluate the performance of the WSNs using both the analytical modeling and the computer modeling simulation as well as validating the results. Computer network modeling techniques have some advantages and disadvantages over each other according to their usage in different type of applications. Each method provides only basic estimations related to the system performance when used alone, however the reliability of the results can only be guaranteed by using more than one of these methods together. The use of analytical modeling and simulation techniques together is the most effective way to evaluate the performance of computer networks. Matching up the results from two different models provides a remarkable validation way and points out whether the system runs stable or not in reality. In this paper, a generic analytical model and a computer model simulation of a developed TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) based WSN Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol with a centralized infrastructure are provided, and these models are used in an example networking application scenario. The results obtained from both models are presented and compared to each other. Node energy consumption, mean end-to-end packet delay and wireless channel utilization are selected as the network performance metrics since they can be enough for an essential system validation and evaluation. This work will be helpful as a reference for researchers and application developers studying on TDMA based WSN MACs.
