The present study seeks to examine Turkish undergraduate linguistics students’ views and thoughts about the role of grammar instruction in relation to foreign language learning. This study focuses on the quantitative and qualitative data examining the pattern of students’ views about grammar instruction in two dimensions: their declarative knowledge about grammar and their considerations about the role of grammar in foreign language learning. The participants of this study were 200 undergraduate students majoring in Linguistics at the Faculty of Letters, Ankara University. The data were collected through a questionnaire which was designed for gathering students’ views and verbal accounts. Each participant was asked to respond to thw closed-ended and open-ended questions aimed at eliciting their opinions about the importance and the adequateness of grammar instruction and how they define what grammar is. The analysis of the data yielded several salient themes regarding grammar and grammar instruction. The results indicate that participants view grammar as both necessary and essential in learning a foreign language. The reasons for this view are that learning grammar offers the necessary information for linguistic production, language use and also for linguistic accuracy.
