Abstract :
In the increasingly globalized world, countries make an effort to enhance their international competitiveness in order to success in the international competition. Although international competitiveness is considered in detail at country (macro), sector and firm level, it is seen more meaningful at sector and especially firm level. Regarding to manufacturing industry, the existence of the enterprises will depend on their competitiveness with respect to competitors by price and non-price factors in domestic and foreign markets. In this respect, the competition modes of sectors/firms in the international markets have critical importance. In this thesis, first of all, effects of globalization on manufacturing industry are discussed. Secondly, the conceptual framework of international competitiveness is tried to explain in detail. Then, by using “revealed quality elasticity” methodology, the competition modes of manufacturing industries in Turkey are determined. In this context, industries are classified into three categories according to competition modes as price, medium quality and quality competition. This classification is performed for SITC Rev.3 three-digit 185 industries in the scope of first important 30 countries of Turkish manufacturing industry trade by using 2005 data. In this regard, it is pointed out that differentiation of policies to be applied in conformity with competition modes of industries can be more beneficial.
