THEORETICAL BASIS OF STRATEGIC HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGEMENT: UNIVERSALISTIC, CONTINGENCY AND CONFIGURATIONAL APPROACHES
Abstract :
Most of the studies about strategic human resources management generally intensify on practical recommendations or empirical information. But it is critisized that these studies are not based on valid theoretical basis, so it makes theoretical development of SHRM field more difficult and to understand human resources applications which are required to become integrated with the organization strategy. This study aims to examine the three approaches (universalistic, contingency, configurational) accepted as the main foundations of SHRM and contribution and assumptions of these approaches about SHRMorganizational performance relation. Moreover development and assumptions of these three approaches and empirical studies are viewed and a general evaluation is made. Also differences, theoretical basis and levels of analysis of these three approaches are reviewed. Finally, it is seen that theoretical development of SHRM focus on different dimensions and priorities instead of explaining HRM-organizational performance relation with only one theory; universalistic approach become more widespread in the other contextes outside North America but also these three approaches should be tested outside North America as well.
