THE EFFECT OF RESILENCE ON BURNOUT: THE MEDIATING ROLE OF ORGANIZATIONAL IDENTIFICATION
Abstract :
This study investigates employees’ resilience, organizational identification, and burnout relationships and analyzes the potential mediating role of organizational identification in the relationship between resilience and burnout. The literature regarding the relationship between resilience, burnout, and organizational identification has not documented well. Further, the relationship between organizational identification and burnout has inconsistent findings. Thus, the relationships between resilience, burnout and identification are reevaluated in this research in order to make significant contributions to the relevant literature. The sample of the study is composed of 430 state employees in Turkey. Survey method is used for collecting data. The reliability and validity of our measurement instruments are tested before in the previous studies. Resilience Scale for Adults, which was developed by Friborg, Hjemdal, Rosenvinge, and Martinussen was employed to measure resilience level of employees. Burnout was measured by Maslach and Jackson’s Burnout Inventory. Finally, organizational idenficiation was measured by Mael and Ashforth’s identification scale. Corelation and a series of regression analyses are applied for testing research hypotheses. Baron and Kenny’s three step procedures are employed in order to test mediation effect. Results show that resilience positively affects organizational identification and negatively affects the employee’s burnout level. The mediating role of organizational identification in the relationships between resilience and burnout is not supported. Findings highlight the direct effects of resilience on employee’s burnout level.
