Abstract :
This study aims to evaluate the cultural intelligence (CQ) dimensions of master mariners and chief officers whom are expected to have high levels of cultural skills and knowledge because of their continuous interaction with the people and organizations from different cultural backgrounds. This study intends to explore the cultural differences encountered in the countries visited. In accordance with the aim, a f ield study encompassing a sample of 119 Turkish master mariners and chief officers was employed. The results showed that difficulties arised due to the cultural differences differ with regard to the countries visited. Eating and drinking habits, foreign language, working culture, technological development are the cultural differences mostly encountered especially in the Far Eastern countries and India. Motivational cultural intelligence of master mariners and chief officers appeared as higher than the other dimensions and metacognitive CQ follows this dimension. Results supported six of the ten hypotheses, suggesting that ship types worked on, foreign language levels, opinions regarding the importance of training on cross-cultural management, the effect of foreign language on cultural interaction and the effect of adaptability of different cultures on occupational success exhibited a significant relationship with perceived CQ. However, the results did not reveal a significant relationship between age, professional qualification, experience at sea and CQ.
