EVALUATION OF COMMUNICATION SKILLS OF PHYSICIANS AND NURSES
Abstract :
The aim of this study is to evaluate the communication skills of physicians and nurses who work in GATF Training Hospital and to determine whether there is a difference between communication skills of them in terms of their socio-cultural backgrounds. The “Communication Skills Inventory” was utilized for the aim of collecting data. 178 physicians and 171 nurses attended to the research. 81,1% of physicians and 83,5% of the nurses were found to have effective communication skills. Nurses communication skills level was found to be significantly higher than physicians in terms of general communication and behavioral communication sub-dimension. Academic title, total working time in institution and general job satisfaction variables for physicians, and education level, age and professional total working time variables for nurses were found to have significant effects on communication skills (p 0,05). We think that enriching the curriculum of GATF and School of Nursing, giving lectures and educations to currently working physicians and nurses, and also organising social activities could be helpful for the purpose of developing communication skills.
