FOREIGN POLICY AND MEDIA: THE NEWSPAPER HÜRRIYET AS PART OF THE PROCESS OF TURKEY’S NEGOTIATION DATE ACQUISITION TO ACCEDE TO THE EUROPEAN UNION
Abstract :
The media acquired a stronger position due to globalisation and foreign affairs gradually became more prominent as a result of the clamped nature of foreign affairs with domestic affairs, and of the political domain with economics and military. The media, besides communicating news, now claims to have a mission of creating opinions and interpreting events. The article attempts to examine the attitude of the newspaper Hürriyet against the EU during the process of Turkey’s Negotiation Date Acquisition to accede to the European Union. Considering this crucial process, how much did the newspaper Hürriyet place the EU on its front page? How was the EU appraised? Is it possible to mention a general trend in this process? Or does the newspaper have an EU policy that is sensitive to current events and is constantly changing? How did Hürriyet primarily position itself as the “sound of Turkish people” or the follower and communicator of EU-related events? The test subject in the study is whether or not Hürriyet is a media channel that addresses the public with news that only make Turkey look good rather than acting as an efficientforeign affairs agent in the process by influencing the political side.
