Abstract :
One of the most discussed issues of economic theories is that the effect of foreign trade which is connected to the internal dynamics of nations in the processes of economic development. Depending on these discussions, many different views have emerged on the impact of foreign trade on economic development. These views are that foreign trade is the engine of economic development, which foreign trade may be the servant of economic development, and that foreign trade have a negative effect on economic development of underdeveloped countries. In this study, the relationship between foreign trade and economic development indicators, covering 1980-2010 period of Turkey, is tested with co-integration and causality analysis and it has been concluded that Turkey s foreign trade during aforementioned period is an important factor in the nation s economic development.
