Abstract
It is possible to define gender as a set of socially constructed practices linked to biological sex that shape how individuals understand the categories of woman and man. These practices include different types of perceptions, relations and institutions. Marriage can be located as a critical institution on reproducing gender roles and this is also valid for narrations about marriage. Especially it is one of the basic topic of popular romances in Turkish literature. In other words it is possible to study the romances as an instrument to reproduce the perception about women with special emphasis on marriage. In this study, Muazzez Tahsin Berkand’s novels about marriage will be focused and her contributions about shaping the gender roles will be discussed.
