A SURVEY WITH REGARD TO RELATION AMONG POVERTY, DISADVANTAGED GRROUP AND CRIME: WOMEN’S SHELTERS IN IZMIR

Poverty is a social fact affecting directly the structure of community. Deprivation occurs when poverty becomes a chronic fact. Moreover when poverty considered together with discriminative facts like disadvantages, community becomes more open to social explosions and high crime rates. Therefore groups that helps to analyze the relation among poverty, being disadvantaged and crime rates becomes prominent. This study concentrates on disadvantaged women groups which are exposed to violence and discrimination. With this aim, the main objective of this study is to analyze the relations among the poverty, being disadvantaged and crime by using multidimensional poverty index of United Nations. In this context a survey based on multi-dimensional poverty index of United Nations applied to women living at women’s shelters in İzmir. According to the results of this study women living at women’s shelters faces poverty not only in economic dimension but also in health, education and social dimensions.
